Civil War Years
Shortly after the civil war broke out, Harriet went south to help and work with contraband's. In 1862, the governor of Massachusetts sent Harriet to South Carolina to be a nurse and a teacher.
She also organized a group of scouts and spies the year after. In 1863 Harriet led troops under the command of Colonel James Montgomery. They hurt southern supply lines by destroying railroads and bridges. She also helped more than 750 slaves escape slavery, Woodcarving of Harriet during the
